Why dont we stop buying stuff from china and make it here in the USA?

Postby corcoran42 » Thu Nov 24, 2011 2:24 pm

This will fix the unemployment rate, but only if we hire american citizens who pay taxes, not foreign invaders. This will put way more money into the hands of american consumers, boosting our economy. the problem here is with the 1% who have a louder voice because they own 99% of the wealth. This lets them bend and twist laws so they can hire foreigners illegally, and legally, at a lower wage, increasing their already wealthy profits, while the working class cant find a job because greedy corporations are paying illegal aliens and foregners overseas as their employees. why isnt there a law against this?

Watch out, everyone, we have a genius economist on YA.

We can't just "stop" buying things from China. First, China's labor is much cheaper. If we suddenly start using labor in the US instead, prices of lots of products would skyrocket, and the cost of living would increase correspondingly, thus making the lowered unemployment rate moot (more working people will be too poor to afford living anyway).

Moreover, cutting off foreign ties would be a foreign relations nightmare. Remember pearl harbor? No, of course not. It was caused (but certainly not justified) because we stopped trading with Japan.

Your assertion that the wealthiest 1% own 99% of the wealth is dead wrong.

Because we like being able to buy stuff cheaply. You know why Wal-Mart is able to sell everything at such low prices? Because almost everything in their stores is manufactured in China, by factories that pay their workers pennies per hour with no safety regulations and no health benefits.

If enough Americans demand "made-in-America-only" products -- and demonstrate their willingness to pay 3 times as much for goods made in America -- then corporations will respond to the demand. Otherwise, it won't happen.

Americans expect to be paid a living wage. Corporations can pay overseas people and children in other countries a lot less money and charge the same for the product. Until Americans will accept slave wages, horrible hours and no benefits not many places will be open for manufacturing here.

That's called protectionism, and it is the quickest way to go back into recession, or worse. If you did that, the Chinese would block your exports and the country could go bust. Not a great idea!

Because the label "Made in America" won't sell as much as "Made in China". Over the many years, this has grown on us.

A consumer goes to the store to buy a toaster. He finds a $6 toaster made in China and an $18 toaster made in America. Now convince that consumer he should pay 3 times as much for the same toaster so a union worker can continue to get a bloated paycheck and a sweet retirement deal. When you can do that people will stop buying from China. Don't hold your breath waiting.

If you owned a toaster manufacturing company would you rather sell toasters for $6 and make a profit or NOT sell them for $18 and go bankrupt? You can whine and cry about evil foreigners, greedy corporations and the 1% all you want. But it won't change reality. You are still faced with the two choices.

You have a really great idea. Lets pass a law that you can't buy toasters made in China. You must buy American made toasters. Pretty soon that $6 toaster will cost you $137. Few people will buy toasters and almost all of the people who work in toaster factories will lose their jobs. But that's OK. The 8 union workers who still have jobs can get an even bigger paycheck and retire when they are 30.

You can replace the word toaster with cars, clothes, electronics, appliances, etc. No matter what the product the results will be the same.
