Why do police officers in really safe cities with no crime make much more than police in dangerous cities?

Postby hjortur » Tue Jun 19, 2012 2:56 am

Why does it seem like police in really safe upscale communities with no violent crime (other than perhaps the rare domestic violence) seem to make 100k+ and police who work in very dirty, violent, crime ridden cities make very less, some really bad cities police only make what equates to 8-9 dollars an hour? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Why would somebody want to risk their life for 20k a year dealing with some of the most dangerous gangs and criminals, when they could get paid 100k for just handing out traffic tickets?

cities with high crime rates also tend to have high poverty rates. Taxing unemployed people does not lead to the city having money to pay cops.

It depends on how much money the local government has and how much they are willing to pay their police officers. In rich areas, there tends to be less crime and more money, whereas in poor areas, there tends to be more crime and less money. Therefore, officers in rich areas are probably payed more than officers in poor areas simply because there is more money available and spent.

upscale areas have a higher tax base. The poor ones don't. It's about affordability. Poor towns can not tax like rich towns can.

The reason the cities are dangerous in the first place are lack of funds to pay for more police officers to enforce the law.

More funding= safer city= higher paid cops

Less funding=less cops and lower paid cops=dangerous city
