Visit To La Alhambra

Postby Gwyddawg » Fri Nov 25, 2016 5:41 am

We're planning a cruise that stops in Malaga next July from 8:00 am to 3pm.  I would(desperately!) love to see Alhambra, but am not sure if time would permit.  Would it make sense to hire a taxi from the port to take us there and back, or try to find a custom tour operator?  Is this simply too short a time to try to do this at all?  Thank you.

Visit To La Alhambra

Postby Elliston » Fri Nov 25, 2016 7:29 pm

Hello Paula

Alhambra is located in Granada which is about 130km by road from Malaga.

In theory you may have time, but it's a bit risky to travel 130km inland, see Alhambra and return in time, any little incident in your travel, sucha as traffic jams and you may be loosing the ship. Don't expect them to wait for you  more than a few minutes.

After finding the bus and train schedules i have realized that i can't be done, you will see:

From Malaga port you should get to Malaga bus station. Travel between Malaga and Granada is faster by bus as it's all by highway and a direct route. By train implies taking two different trains and waiting some time in Antequera or Bobadilla for the second train.

Anyway train and bus stations are side by side in Malaga and not far from the port, but about 2km from  the cruises pier, a short ride is recommendable.

Malaga bus station websitehttp://www.estabus.emtsam.es/

From there you may take the bus to Granada

with Alsahttp://www.alsa.es/portal/site/Alsa?portal.alsa.request.locale=en_GB

you may take the 8:30 or 9:00 bus that cost 9,75euros

MALAGA    GRANADA     08:30    10:05

MALAGA    GRANADA    09:00    10:55

if you take the 9:00 bus you will arrive at 11:00, let about 20minutes to get to Alhambra, take a taxi as it is abit far from the bus station.(choosing trains instead won't leave you closer to Alhambra in Granada).

You should have reserved tickets, a must or you will spend your few hours queuing to get in and will finally fail to see Alhambra.

Official Alhambra site, explains and allows(via Servicaixa) to book tickets in advance.http://www.alhambra-patronato.es/

Now you will need two hours to get back from Granada and be in time for 3pm, you will need to leave Granada around 12:30pm, so you will have about 1h30 to see all Alhambra complex, impossible, and consider that the most important part, the nasrid palace have a fixed hour for visit, so they may give you an hour around 12pm and you won't have time to see this part of Alhambra complex.

To return with time to get back to the cruise you will have to use one of the following buses in Granada

MALAGA   GRANADA     12:00    14:00

MALAGA    GRANADA    12:15    14:00

I think you should choose one of the tours offered by the cruise(i'm sure they will offer something) or visit Malaga by your own. With a morning is enough to see the main monuments of the city.http://www.malagaturismo.com/home.jsp

I hope this helps.
