Postby giulio » Tue Dec 20, 2011 4:12 pm

54. The National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center reports that 46.9% of all spinal cord injuries are caused by vehicle crashes. Suppose that we choose 20 spinal cord injuries at random.

a. Find the variance and standard deviation of the number of spinal cord injuries that are the result of vehicle crashes.

b. If we choose 20 spinal cord injuries at random, and observe that 10 are from vehicle crashes, is this unusual? Clearly explain why or why not.

Thanks, and please stay online. I have 2 of the same kinds of questions?!!

Ans:
a. p=46.9%=0.469 and n=20 , q=1-p=1-0.469=0.531

mean = np=20*0.469=9.38

standard deviation=sqrt(npq)=sqrt(20*0.469*0.531)
=2.2317(Ans.)
variance=npq=20*0.469*0.531=4.9807(Ans…
