Slander At Work And What To Do

Hi,

I was told by my manager and a supervisor that there was a person(from management) that has been spreading rumors about me to several people saying that I am involved with another person at work(which is not true). The person spreading these rumors is known for lying a lot. This actually has been going on for months yet I was just told about this now. This person is leaving the company soon. But is creating several people to think wrongly about me and my persona. I was advised by my manager if I go to HR I'd be supported(yet they have not done this) Should I contact HR myself or wait for the person to leave

Thanks for writing in. I understand your discomfort with the rumor - but rumors get worse if you give importance to them.

Do not let it affect you - and most importantly - your work. Better still - the person is leaving. Lies have a habit of dying pretty soon - if we don't keep poking at them. If anyone suggests going to HR, laugh it off. Say that making such things formal would create an issue out of a non-issue

Trust me. People talk. Then the person will leave. People will talk. You won't. Then they will lose interest. Then they will forget!
