Can you please give me some similarities between the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. As well as the differences between the two as well.

Thank You.

Russian Empire Vs. Soviet Union

Dear Darrell,

One could write a thesis on this issue(and certainly did), but if to be short.... ;)

I. Similarities:

1. Regional Empires with global ambitions.

2. Overcentralised .

3. Strict social control.

4. United by both ideology and military force.

5. Very diverse in terms of cultures and ethnicities.

II. Differences:

1. USSR was secular/communistic(sometimes communism is treated as a form of a religion), RE  -  religious, mostly Orthodox country.

2. USSR - formal people's republic, though with elements of dictatorship of Communistic Party, RE - formal and real monarchy.

3. USSR in 2nd half of XX century was a global superpower, RE - was more of a regional empire.

4. USSR after industrialisation was much more urban country, RE - was mainly agricultural country.

Good luck,

Oleg.
