Post Ercp Pancreatitis

I am a healthy 39 yr old female who went to the hospital for gall bladder pain.  I was told that they couldn't tell from the CT if there were stones in the bile duct so before they would do the gall bladder surgery, they needed to do the ERCP.  They did the ERCP and I became very ill and suffered a lot of pain which they said was moderate to severe pancreatitis.  I am very angry over this because they took a lot away from me and my kids from the lengthy hospitalization to the money lost from not working and time away from my kids.  Can you please tell me if this is worth pursuing from a malpractice standpoint?  By the way, there was nothing in the bile duct when they did the ERCP so diagnostically, nothing was found.  I still have my gall bladder and can't have it removed for another 2 months.  Thanks for your time!

Carla,

I have handled ERCP caused pancreatitis and I suggest you consult with a medical malpractice attorney.  Your case depends on what is or is not shown on the CT Scan and your lab values along with your clinical presentation.  There are much less evasive diagnostic ways to determine bile duct stones such as an MRCP which do not have the fairly large secondary risks of the ERCP.

I know that pancreatitis is extremely painful.  I hope you have a full recovery.

Very truly yours,
