New York State Dental Medicaid

Postby Umair » Tue Dec 13, 2016 9:05 pm

Dear Joy:  My sister is disabled and on Medicaid.  She recently went to a New York State dentist representing himself as accepting Medicaid Dental.  The dentist told my sister that Medicaid will only pay for extractions and dentures.  The rest of the cost is out of her pocket to the tune of $5K which is out of the question.  How can she find out what her dental benefits are under NYS Medicaid.  Also, is there a list of dentist accepting Medicaid in the Westchester area?  I've researched many websites and I cannot find anything specific.

Cathy,

Unfortunately, I think the answer she got from her dentist is the truth--with the exception of children.  If she is under 19 years of age, the list of covered procedures is more expansive.

One thought:  if there is a teaching hospital with a dental program near you, she may be able to get her work done for very low cost or free, since she is disabled and on Medicaid.

This is an option to consider.

Look on the back of her Medicaid card.  There should be an 800 number to call.  A case manager can help you with locating dentists in your area who accept Medicaid.  I am so sorry I do not have resources that can help you with locating a provider. Best regards,

Joy
