How do you mail a gun?

Postby jerard » Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:05 am

I want to send my cousin a M1911 that our grandpa used in Germany. But I do not know how to mail it legally. It is a piece of family history. I am not going to mail him the ammo or anything for it and I am going to check and clean it first and turn on the safety when I mail it.

I was asked why I wanted to send this by the person on the phone at the post office. I am not a terrorist, I am not a criminal, I am not an illegal. I am a tax paying law abiding citizen who just wants to mail my cousin a piece of family history.

So what do I do?

If he lives in the same state that you do and he is over 21, and your state permits it. it would be be best to give it to him in person. If he lives in another state it is illegal, by federal law, to send it to him directly. The legal way would to have an FFL dealer in your state send it to an FFL dealer near him. He would then pick up the gun after passing a background check..

You have to take it to a gun shop that you trust...................

and mail it to another gun shop near your brother where he can pick it up.

-essentially you are making a sale so both of you need to be able to purchase a firearm.

The ONLY people who can mail a firearm in the US is an FFL dealer. If you need to send a firearm back to the factory for service is the only exception.

The gun dealers are going to charge you a fee to do this.

Yes, you can insure it. I'd be really leary about sending it too. You can ask them to use UPS instead of the post office but Fedex does not ship firearms I believe(company policy).

I would wait to give it to him in person. if you send it through the mail someone will most likely take it. You wouldn't want to risk that.

You will need to take it to a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder -- that is, a gun dealer. He can ship to another FFL dealer near your cousin. They will charge a modest fee for this. This is the only legal way to ship a gun.

Since he lives in Texas, he will not need a permit for the gun. Most states (MO and TX included) do not have registration or permits for handguns.
