Postby March » Sat Nov 26, 2016 6:42 pm

Hi Carol, I want to start a home based bakery business in Volusia county, Florida. Mainly selling at farmers markets. What do I need to do to get started? What licenses if any do I need? Will I be permitted to use my home kitchen? thanks for your information.

Hi Lori,

Your in luck...Florida passed a food cottage law allowing individuals to prepare certain foods for sale out of their own home kitchen just this past year! Here's information on the law and information on types of foods that can be prepared in your home, licenses, sales, product labeling, etc: http://desoto.ifas.ufl.edu/pdf/CottageFoodAdvisory.pdf

Now with that said, each county can prohibit sales or require special licensing so your first step should be contacting your local Volusia County Health Department.  Here's their contact information:

Field offices are open Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Daytona Beach field office: 386-274-0692

DeLand field office: 386-822-6250

New Smyrna Beach field office: 386-424-2061

Good luck Lori.
