I have two daughters that work for the same company. My oldest daughter(A****)has been there for 2 years. She's finishing her final  year in college and needed to decrease her hours to devote more time to studying so she asked her manager several times to decrease her hours. The manager denied her request, stating "we don't have any of those positions". However, there are multiple people who only work once every month or with even less frequency. It is a popular furniture store owned by a very large company and you receive a considerable discount as an employee. I've been hearing horror stories about the manager and the way she treats the staff ever since A** went to work there. The manager sounds as though she has a personality disorder, my guess is Histrionic but can't be certain. I've been told she bullies and harasses the new people and those who have turned in their resignations, is incredibly mean to the asst managers, has wide mood swings, is rude to customers when they "get on her nerves" among  other issues. A**** is very passive and I'm sure that has helped her relationship with the manager. Throughout  her employment I've heard the stories of her treatment of the staff and I've encouraged her to report her but she refused. She tells me everyone in the store is fearful of her and the only person to ever report her was an assistant manager that resigned and filed a complaint against her during her exit interview. That same store was hiring and my middle daughter  (M****) was also moving to that town to attend college so she applied and was hired. M*** is not as passive as the other daughter so I was a little concerned about how she would handle the manager when she applied but encouraged her to go ahead and hoped for the best. I advised her just to do her job and not be confrontational with J****(manager). My daughter worked there for a month and I had asked her if the manager was okay to work with and she said, "yeah, she's crazy but she's okay". Then last week she was home, drove an hour to go into work, clocked in and they said "sales are down today, we don't need you" and she had to turn around and clock out. I've been told this is common practice, the manager changes the schedule without notice, doesn't notify the employees and cancels them without prior notification. They  come in and clock in, then they send them home. My daughter said  they then go in and delete the 3 minute clock ins so it won't show up on the time sheets. The next day M**** worked was without incident.  Then, she went in last Sunday and the manager was there. My oldest daughter was working that day as well and called me after M*** had been there about 3 hours and said "mom, you've got to let M*** resign, J*** is being so mean to her". They both said she was bullied throughout the entire shift. She was scheduled to work the next day. We discussed it and decided it would be best if she resigned. She was concerned about how she would be treated based on her treatment the preceding day so I told her to call in sick and turn in her resignation the following day.  

She called and spoke with the assistant manager who told her "It is J****'s(the manager) policy that if you call in sick, you have to find your own replacement, What's wrong with you?". The asst manger gave her phone numbers to 3 employees. My daughter attempted to call them but was unsuccessful at finding a replacement. She called the asst manager back and told her. She then said "well can you come in at 4?" My daughter said "yes".

In the meantime, a series of phone calls ensues between the manager, asst manager and my oldest daughter A****. The asst manager called A**** and said "J***** is livid that M*** has called in and is forcing me to call you to find out if she is really sick, she wants you to call her, find out and let J***** know". I've been told this is consistent practice too. When an employee calls in sick, they call other employees and ask "are they really sick or just hung over?"Not only is this unprofessional but a confidentiality issue. J***** then called A***, told her to tell M**** to  "get the paperwork from the doctor and they will file it on workman's comp". My daughter never mentioned filing any sort of workman's comp, it wasn't a workman's comp issue. She had made her work the stockroom the day before.  There was a lot of lifting of beds and other heavy items and she wouldn't help her  or get anyone else to help so I guess she was assuming that it might be the case but it wasn't. While the phone calls were being made to my oldest daughter and I saw how unprofessional the entire thing was being handled, I advised her to call and resign effective immediately. I don't advocate ever doing that but she had not been there long enough to use it as a reference and under the circumstances I felt it was the lesser of two evils. I'm just wondering if I should file a complaint with the  company or just leave it be. My oldest daughter turned in her two week notice the following day, unrelated to the other daughter's events. She resigned because they wouldn't decrease her hours. My oldest daughter is working out her notice now and is really concerned about being bullied. My daughters are both leaving, it won't be of any concern to them. I just hate to see bullies get away with it. She harasses all the employees in the store and they're all scared of her and won't report her. Should I contact the company or will they think I'm just a disgruntled parent and trash my letter? And, if I do contact them should I do to the district manager or human resources?

Hi Amy.

Well written letter. Thanks for that. By the way, you could have used fake names instead of the A****. That made it a little hard to read.

The best scenario would be for both your daughters to send a letter instead of you. Actual employees carry more weight than their parents, if you know what I mean. But given what's happened, I do think they should send a letter to HR and send a copy to the District Manager. From my experience, companies with solid internal and external customer service values will act on such a letter by investigating further into the scenario and talk with other employees, etc. With that said, sometimes the upper management is just as dysfunctional as the manager and the letter may do nothing.

The bottom line is, the company needs to know; otherwise, your daughters become part of the problem versus part of the solution. Perhaps you can craft the letter and let the girls sign it or something like that. I'm guessing more employees will come forward once the word is out that another complaint was sent in.

Keep me posted. The manager most likely didn't break the law with her poor management style(although questioning if someone is sick is pretty bad), but if your daughters' letter could end up in her personnel file, that would be a good start.
