Did President Obama merely step in to try and save Arizona from collapsing because of SB1070?

Yes. I guess Republicans don't care about violence escalating towards latinos.

Most of the answers so far really don't seem to understand this issue from Arizona's point of view. 1070 passed and basically duplicates federal government law. That law says illegal immigration is illegal, and while any logical thinking person can understand the ramifications most are closing their eyes to the real problem, criminal illegal immigration!

All you have to do is live in the state to see the daily problems created by illegal immigration. Let me ask you back: How would you like it if the federal government closed a substantial part of your state, claiming with posted signs that the area is dangerous? How would you like it if a segment of your state was littered with tons upon tons of trash strewn in wilderness areas? How would you like it if your state was a gateway to criminal and terrorists elements from all over the world (not just south America)? How would you like it if your home was basically worthless because of illegal immigration? What would you do if you worked to build a home in a border city (there's a lot of them), and it was in the middle of the new plunder trail, where illegal immigrants will do just about anything for food, water, money, and evade capture?

While it doesn't take much thought to understand that many illegal immigrants are simply searching for a better life, and like legal citizens they also pay taxes from payroll, goods and services. But the most simple issue seems to be the hardest for a lot of people to get their heads around... How do you stop the criminal element that is disguised and infiltrated into groups of those searching for a better life?

While many of your answers seem to praise the President for his actions so far, suing the state of Arizona is probably one of the worse paths to follow as the problem still exist, and only being addressed by the State. The answer for this problem is not and should not have been made political, it's a right of the citizen to live a happy and prosperous life and life style which has and is being deprived in many areas and cities in Arizona.

While many believe this is a discrimination issue, few give any credence to the plight of the Arizona resident, and that should be the first and foremost consideration for this argument. The president is wrong and so are most of your answers.

No. He has done what he has to do to prevent a 'rogue state' from interfering in a matter of federal jurisdiction.

DHS policy has always been to place a priority on arresting and deporting dangerous violent criminals, this is common sense. Most police departments encourage cops to look for muggers, not to waste all their time on jaywalkers. Arizona police don't enforce the state law against adultery, but the FBI is not planning to bug hotel rooms to enforce it. It is not that important.

SB 1070 was Brewer's way of getting re-elected. Conservatives hated her for raising taxes until she came up with it. SB 1080 offers $100 million upfront to a private prison contractor connected to her for a 50 year contract.
