Decorative Licence Plate Frame

Postby Elihu » Wed Nov 30, 2016 11:11 pm

I live in Stony Plain, AB and last night I was pulled over and checked out on a routine traffic stop, being that it was New Years Eve. When the officer couldn't find anything obvious wrong, he decided to inform me that the licence plate frame that has running lights around it is against the law. He said it is a  $115.00 fine but didn't fine me. Is it truly against the law to beautify your vehicle in Alberta or was he just giving me the gears. The police in Brockville, Ontario seemed to thing it was a great addition as it makes the licence stand out more. I also have a proper licence plate light.

It seems to me that with all the one lighted vehicles, no lighted vehicles and vehicles that contravene the law alot worse than my silly little plate frame, that the local constabulary could find something more drastic to pick on.

Is there a website that I can look up these kinds of questions?   Sincerely, Robert

P.S.- One of my neighbours is an Edmonton Motorcycle Officer, recuperating from an accident, --Just information!!

Decorative Licence Plate Frame

Hi again Robert!

I apologize if my previous answer was not as clear or did not fully answer your question.  I think I may be missing something here.  If you would like me to further clarify please don't hesitate to write me back at any time.

Sincerely,

Marco Manna

Hi Robert, thanks for writing!

There are several sections of the Traffic Safety Act that make it an offence to have running lights around a license plate as a "frame."  One being that it is an offence to project any color other than red or white to the rear of a vehicle.  An other being that the use of a lighted frame around a license plate decreases the visibility of the plate at night time.

You can find a copy of the Traffic Safety Act at the Alberta Queen's Printer website which is located at http://www.qp.gov.ab.ca/index.cfm

I hope this helps!
