Cake Decorating Business

Postby misi16 » Tue Dec 13, 2016 2:13 am

My daughter and I are considering offering cake decorating

services out of her home.  I have previously been "food sanitation certified", but currently am not.  Is this a necessity in Illinois?  Please advise me on the proper steps to take to start this business!  Many Thanks!

Hi Kendra,

Yes, if you are resident of Illinois and wish to sell food products you must be a licensed food safety food manager.  This requires attending a 15 hour class, passing a test and paying $35 to the Illinois Department of Health.  You can find a listing of classes by calling the IDPH Regional Office closest to you.  Here's the phone numbers for all the IDPH Regional Offices:

Rockford - 815-987-7511

Peoria - 309-693-5360

Edwardsville - 618-656-6680

Bellwood - 708-544-5300

W. Chicago - 630-293-5900

Champaign - 217-278-5900

Marion - 618-993-7010

I assume you are baking and decorating cakes...right?  You will need a kitchen separate from your family kitchen, a 3-compartment sink, a back-flow devise on your drains and a separate handwashing sink.  This could be set up in your basement.

It will be important that you develop a business plan and discuss with a lawyer insurance and liability.  You'll also need to decide on advertising, transportation, storage of food supplies and equipment needs. I suggest you search the internet for ideas on starting a home-based cake decorating business.  I found these to be quite helpful:http://www.powerhomebiz.com/guide/cases/imi-cake.htmhttp://ezinearticles.com/?Start-a-Cake-Decorating-Business-for-Fun-and-Profit&id...http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/176254/starting_a_custom_cake_decoratin...

In addition, University of Illinois Extension offers assistance in preparing business plans, etc.  Call your local Extension Office(visit http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/state/) and see what services they can provide.

Good luck Kendra,

Carol
